The book spans across a few years. A short story skipping through time? Yes, that’s what Midnights is. One New Year party sees two strange kids—Noel and Mag get to know each other. Noel is dorky, funny, loves dancing and has a severe nut allergy! Mag is his hero sans a cape. They become friends and then they become best friends.
Noel is the kind of character that one just falls in love with. The book skips to the next new year party and the next. The venue is the same, the occasion is also the same. The same people are dancing, drinking and making merry. Everything is the same, and yet everything is different.
It is a sweet and simple story and the way it’s written is progressive, without dwelling on too many details while still giving the reader a gist of the events and the lives of the characters. One of the things I don’t like about short stories is how they just touch upon ideas and don’t dwell deeper. While there are some stories that are all about one event and closely monitoring it, some just don’t cut it for me. I want more. Midnights is the former—it left me wanting to know more.
Midnights was a nice way to start my attempt at this fun exercise at Meraki Post. The ending, though not out of the blue, still felt good and left a good after taste. While the book starts with a new beginning, it has no concrete end. What will be the end of this friendship? No, not the end of this story, the end of their story—which might span many pages beyond what this short story is. Infact, I would go as far as to say, the end of this short story is the actual beginning of their story, of their lives.
I wouldn’t say that this story will blow your mind, or will leave you with extreme emotions building in you, what it does, is restores your faith in chance encounters, relationships and life itself. You can read this story in the collection of short stories titled, My True Love Gave To Me: Twelve Holiday Stories, by Stephanie Perkins.

The frontlit, high-resolution Kindle Paperwhite seems to be the officially preferred Kindle at Meraki Post; Veena, Gazala and Ram have one each. And while Pooja may claim she is more of the “Love the new book smell” kind of person, she may be secretly deciding between the premium Kindle Oasis and the simple and efficient Good Ol’ Kindle.
