Last Meal at Whole Foods

Saïd Sayrafiezadeh

Read time: a minute

This particular story is a dedication to all the mothers.

The story beings with a man describing the dinner with his mom in a Wholefoods store.

I’m having dinner at the Whole Foods on Center Boulevard with my mother, who is dying.

The upcoming death is revealed in the first sentence itself. Thereafter the author describes his mother who looks as young to be his girlfriend. Anyone who will pass by will say so. He examines the serene face that her mother possess and the nibbling that is her mother’s signature. Only now, she looks like she is in hurry.

Dying is arduous and taxing. Only the dead rest in peace.

He recollects the days when her mother would teach her spelling while playing scrabble. He hated losing to her. The help that she offered frustrated him more. But now it is completely different. She can score no more than 3 points with her words such as cat and rat.

Saïd Sayrafiezadeh wants to make her proud. It is a say of lingering sadness.

The story is filled with melancholy. It is a good writing. I was rather impressed with it. Looking forward to reading more stories from the author.
